Roxana Fire Chief J. Clyde (Squirt) Lawrence died at 4:20 a.m. today at Wood River Township Hospital following an illness of five months. He was 53.
Mr. Lawrence, a pipefitter at Shell Oil Co., had lived in Roxana for 47 years, and had been employed at the oil refinery for 29 years.
He had been a member of the Roxana fire department for 26 years and department chief for 13 years. He was a member of Illinois and Madison County Fireman's Association.
He belonged to Wood River Lodge of the Moose, Shell Recreation Club, and was a member of Pipefitters Local 553.
Mr. Lawrence was born Dec. 10, 1910, at Mendon, Mo., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Lawrence.
He and his wife, the former Alvera Oller, lived at 144 W. First Street, in Roxana. They were married March 23, 1940 at St. Charles, Mo.
Survivors are his widow; two children, Gay and Eugene, at home; two brothers, Harry, Edwardsville, and Joseph, East Alton; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Miller and Mrs. Grace Bowler, Roxana, and Mrs. Eva Ray, Collinsville.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, Roxana, followed by burial in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
The body is at Marks Mortuary, Wood River, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday and until 11 a.m. Friday when the body will be take to the church.
