Elmer V. Smith, of Edgegrove, departed this life, November 9.

He was the son of the late Joseph E. and Helen E. (Wilt) Smith.

Mr. Smith retired from Mechanicsburg Naval Supply Depot after 42 years of service. He attended Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown; was a member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Edgegrove; a life member of both the Conewago Fire Company, where he served as treasurer for 25 years, and the McSherrystown Knights of Columbus; a member of the Catholic War Veterans in Bonneauville; the Adams County Volunteer Firefighters Association; the Adams County Fire Police Association, and the American Bowling Congress.

Mr. Smith was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War with the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper at Fort Campbell, KY.

He was the husband of Kathleen M. "Kathy" S. Smith, his wife of 48 years who survives him; in addition to his wife are two sons, Edward Smith and Andrew Smith, both of Hanover; four daughters, Karen Smith, New Oxford, Lori Markle, McSherrystown, Suzanne Klunk and Julie Brown, both of Hanover; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph J. Smith, Irishtown, and Harold J. Smith, Hanover, and three sisters, Grace Neiderer, Marie Welk and Mary "Mert" Smith, all of Hanover. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Staub, and two brothers, Clair and Rodney Smith.
