Full name was August Carl Herman Blank.

His parents Wilhelm (William) and Dora were typical farmers in Germany. He received limited formal education.

In April 1866 he left from Bremen, Germany for America with his father, his mother had died in Germany prior, and his sister Wilhemina Kohl and her family (husband Johann Kohl and sons William and Herman) on the passenger ship Ericsson (manifest # 30085), arriving in New York City May 3, 1866.

After spending just a few days in NYC, he came west to Portage, Wisconsin, where he worked for eight years as a section hand on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul railroad. He then bought a team of horses and went west, landing in Madison County, Nebraska. On his homestead quarter section of land he went through two sod houses, finally erecting a good frame house in the early 1890's.

On November 28, 1876 he was united in marriage to Amelia "Molly" Rudat in Madison County, Nebraska. Their oldest child Otto, born in 1878, died in his early youth.
