Born in Jamestown, LA on April 7, 1915, Willard was preceded in death by his parents, George Whitson Basinger and Flarrie Basinger Alvis and brothers Neil, Ray and D.L. Basinger. His only sister, Estelle Basinger Langston of Glenwood, AR survives him. Grandson, Shane Basinger, and Shanes's daughters Jadyn and Kinsley also predecease him.
Willard graduated from Sarepta H.S. and for his academic efforts was presented a surprise at graduation – a full scholarship to LA Tech. His own surprise was that he had enlisted in the Marines.
After a whirlwind courtship, Willard married Mary Palma "Pam" Mobley on July 2, 1943. They loved and raised four sons who also survive him: George Basinger and wife Patricia of Louisville, KY, David Basinger of Ft. Worth, TX, Bob Basinger and wife Marcia of Shreveport, LA, and Gary Basinger and wife Robin of Greenwood, LA.
Grandchildren are Brad (Jennifer) Basinger of Manassas, VA and Tracey Basinger (Jerry) Champagne of Luling, LA; Dr. Brian (Heather) Basinger and Kip Basinger (Bobby) Lyles all of Shreveport, LA and Clint Basinger of New Orleans, LA; Jimmy Basinger, Terry (Kristi) Basinger and Chris (Ashley) Basinger all of Haslet, TX; Shelly Basinger (Dean) Ruud of Shreveport, LA and Matthew Basinger of Greenwood, LA.
Great-grandchildren include David, Justin, Joey, Louis,. and Billy Basinger; Lacey, Cody, Dusty, Lauren and Logan Basinger; Caleb, Devlin, Carson, and Cameron Basinger and Albany Jane Lyles; Kyler Basinger; and Taylor Powell.
In 1954 Willard accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at Camp Okubo, Japan. In Shreveport he served his Lord at Brookwood Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he faithfully served as a deacon and greeter for many years.
Willard enjoyed fishing, reading, ice cream, coffee, a good country church singin', and watching the Saints on TV. He was a humble man who greatly loved family and was loved in return.
His grandsons are honored to be his pallbearers.
