George Ray Baldwin died of pancreatic cancer on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, his 82nd birthday. Graveside service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in Greenwood Memorial Park. George Ray Baldwin was born in 1930 in Fort Worth to Bessie Brantner Baldwin and Raymond Louis Baldwin. A longtime resident of San Francisco, Calif., he spent his final years joyously becoming an astute ancestry researcher along with his cousin, Patsy Johnson, building a family tree that now includes well over 11,000 members. Much to his surprise, he discovered that his earliest American ancestors arrived from Europe on the colonial ship The Speedwell and eventually settled in Massachusetts Bay Colony. Incomplete research also suggests that others settled in Jamestown. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him including his beloved kitties, Lilly and Emma. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dolores Foster and the late Barbara Solberg, both of Texas. Survivors: He was the beloved father of Alicia Vaughn, Amy Carroll and Hugh Baldwin; cherished life partner of Neal Dorf; devoted "Granddad" of Gwen Elliott, Shannon Stevens, Eric Stevens and Summer Gates; adoring great-grandfather of Alex, Ben, Wyatt, Sam and Andy; and loving brother of Carolyn Hayden and Louis Baldwin, both of Texas. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
