Carmel Evelyn was one of three children born to Joseph Lytle Duncan and Lilly Pearl Dodson. She was raised in the Payne Gap area of Mills County, walking to school to Star, Texas, which was several miles. She loved to play with her paper dolls, and play with animals. She loved the out of doors, and preferred to be there rather than in the house.
There were many Duncan cousins very close by to play with, most of them being boys, so she was quite the tomboy, trying to outdo the boys. She loved to play tricks on them, and on her family, which quite often got her in trouble. She kept up this teasing and trick playing all her life.

She attended Star School, and later Lometa school, which she graduated from. After graduation, she still was helping with the hard work on her family's farm, with her brother Ray and sister Barbara.

She met Olan Miles and after a period of dating, they married 23 Dec 1943 in Star, Mills County, Texas, in a small ceremony at the preacher's home, Brother Nixon.

Olan "Tiny" had joined the Army, so he returned to his base after a few days together, and she continued to live with her family. After her firstborn, Joe was born, they moved to Fort Hood (then Camp Hood) in Killeen to be with him. They later moved back to Star and helped take care of Olan's mother and siblings, as his father had died.

Carmel was a Christian woman, reading her bible daily, attending church, and being sure all her boys attended church and bible school. She had a deep faith.

Carmel was a wonderful cook, and could make a dollar stretch like nobody's business! She sewed all the clothes for the children and herself, and made many quilts. She loved making things, and made many Christmas ornaments out of cloth and her crocheting over the years which all the family still cherish.

She loved family and big gatherings. She canned many a jar of vegetables and jellies over the years. She always had a big garden, as did all the Duncans. She attended all the family reunions she could get to.

When the big drought hit Mills County, they moved to Odessa, Texas to work for family already there, where Olan could help build housing for the booming oil business in Odessa. Olan always built or remodeled houses for them over the years. Carmel was always by his side whenever possible. Later on, Olan joined the police force in Odessa, and Carmel was home to raise the children. She had originally wanted 12 children, but life had her settle on a mere six boys,

They eventually moved to Alvin, Texas where Olan became Chief of Police, then they returned to the old family home in Star, Texas, with Olan and Carmel remodeling and enlarging the home. She loved being in the country and was happy with a lot of people dropping by, and family reunions.

Even in her later years, she was very happy making quilts and her arts and crafts. She started collecting dolls and making clothes for them, along with collecting rocks and plants. She loved vegetable and flower gardening. She would have school classes in Star come by her house as a school outing and she would put her many, many dolls and rocks on display for them, educating them on the types.

Her husband Olan Thurber died while remodeling their house for a 3rd time, so her grown boys all pitched in and finished the house, which she lived in for many years. In her early 80's, her boys wanted her to move to Princeton so she could be close to all of them, where they could help take her to doctors, and check in on her. She kept the Star, Tx house, and they all used it to stay in when hunting and fishing on the old Dodson land in Mills County which had been left to Carmel and her sister, Barbara.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, and a grandson, Joseph Randal Miles.

She is survived by all her sons and daughter-in-laws, and 89 grandchildren, gr-grandchildren and gr-gr-grandchildren.

Carmel passed away at her home in Princeton, Texas, and was brought back to Mills County for her services, and was buried next to her beloved husband, Olan Thurber at Center City Cemetery in Mills County.
