Ambrose R. Clarke, 63, of
221 S. Indiana Ave., retired
chairman of the mathematics
department of Batavia High
School, and former teacher at
Potsdam High School, died at
12:35 a.m. Sunday in the coronary
care unit of Mercy Hos
pital.
The funeral will be Tues
day at 11 a.m. at the Simpson
Funeral Home with Msgr. Gerald
F. Kellogg, pastor of St.
Patrick's Church, a highschool
classmate of Mr.
Clarke, officiating. Burial will
be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral
home today from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m.
His widow, Mrs. Marie Ot
tersland Clarke, survives.
Born April 2, 1909, at
Rocky Mount, N.C., he was
educated in public schools in
New Jersey and New York
and was graduated from Cornell
University, Ithaca, with a
bachelor of arts degree. He
received a master's degree in
education from St. Lawrence
University, Canton, and also
studied at Potsdam and Oswego
State University Colleges
and Clarkson College of Technology,
Potsdam.
Mr. Clarke retired as chairman
of the mathematics department
of Batavia High
School Jan. 1, 1969, a position
he had held since 1945. He
was dean of boys at Batavia
High School for eight years.
Prior to 1945, he taught at
the Manlius School and at
Potsdam High School, where
he taught mathematics, public
speaking and coached dramatics.
During World War II he
was an instructor in the V-12
program at St. Lawrence University
and the ASTP at
Clarkson College. From 1946
to 1956 he was a summer em
ploye of the State Department
of Transportation as a
senior engineering aide with
the Watertown office.
Mr. Clarke married the former
Marie A. Ottersland of
Watertown Aug. 28, 1939, at
the Holy Family Church Rectory
with Rev. Harold J. Skelly, assistant pastor, officiating.
Mr. Clarke was the first
vice president, second president,
committee member and
charter member of the Association
of Mathematics Teachers of New York State,
