Joan Pierson Schulz, 74, passed away on September 15, 2012, at her home in Charlotte, NC. Mrs. Schulz was born in Jackson Heights, NY, to William Pierson and Betty Whittles, and raised in Ozone Park, NY. The Schulz family lived in Merrick, NY, prior to moving to North Carolina in 1979. She was preceded in death by husband Reinhold "Ronny" Schulz and daughter Elizabeth. Mrs. Schulz was secretary to Dr. Rene Dubos at the Rockefeller Institute in Manhattan during the 1950s, and later worked for the State of NC's Child Support Enforcement Agency. She was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Charlotte. She was the beloved sister of Barbara Nugent of Melville, NY; devoted mother to Jennifer (Douglas) Higgins of Northampton, MA, William Schulz of Carrboro, NC, and Steven (Judy) Schulz of Torrance, CA; and loving grandmother to Leslie and Oliver Higgins, Eric and Evelyn Schulz. Mrs. Schulz leaves behind nieces, nephews and innumerable friends. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at 2:00 pm at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3200 Park Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Interment at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
