I have found evidence that Susanna and James Slaughter had a daughter, Susan Clayton Slaughter who was the first wife of Capt. Thomas Speed. I have their marriage record in 1798 in Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY. Susan had a daughter who died as a young child (Anna Maria). Susan died before the daughter but it is not sure if they were buried in the Speed family Cemetery or not because she died before Cottage Grove was complete, but Anna Maria died a couple of years after Susan died. Cottage Grove and the history of Thomas Speed is well documented. The article on Cottage Grove published by the Filson Club has details of his first marriage to Susan; information on his daughter, and the fact that all of his surviving children were by his second wife. His first wife is all but forgotten and when Mann & Greenwell Funeral home moved the bodies buried in that cemetery at Cottage Grove to St. Joseph Cemetery in Bardstown, no mention of either Susan or Anna Maria was found. So, where are they buried? If their graves could not be found when the others were moved, are they still on the property along with what has to be several enslaved persons ?None of those enslaved were listed in the removal of bodies to Bardstown. The National Register of Historic Homes has Cottage Grove documents complete with drawings of the place, including the drawing of the family cemetery. A list of enslaved persons found in probated records of Nelson County, KY can be found in those records and elsewhere. One of the Slaves, named Thomas Speed is among them. Several of the enslaved people were willed to the widow (nee McIlvoy) and children of Thomas Speed.
