He was born April 22, 1931, in Bagota, Texas, and moved to Spade at 18. He later lived in Littlefield where he was a supervisor at Bell Dairy for 32 years before retiring in 1993. He also owned a service station from 1975 to 1980. He was an Army veteran and a member of Word Aflame Pentecostal Church. He married Trish Shambeck on Sept. 9, 1989, in Lubbock.
