Family history says: Before the end of 1869, something occurred that made Edward feel he had to flee for his life. So, he abandoned his family and assumed the name of Henry L. Dikeman, his cousin. He lived in several western states and kept in touch with his family by an occasional letter or visit, always as Henry, a brother of Edward.
Edward, as Henry L. Dikeman, eventually settled at Lopez Island, San Juan Co., Washington. He was a mail carrier during several of his years on Lopez Island. He died on February 10, 1917, in Washington State Hospital at Sedro Woolley. His death certificate reads Henry L. Dikeman, Lopez Island, Washington, age 86, born in New York.
