L. J. or "Lute" was the son of John Andrew Jackson Chapman and Harriet E. Dempsey of Kansas City, Mo.

He moved with family friends to Colorado at age 16, and hauled ore from St Elmo to Alpine, according to Kat. He later after hauling everything that needed a ride, moved his family to Creede and built the largest team operation in the upper Rio Grande area. This guy built the road from South Fork up Wolf creek and joined with the Pagosa road team.

Lute and Mary Weber were married in 1882 and had seven children: Hallie (Collins), Carl, Emma (Fewell), John Jr. who died very young, Henry, Helen (Klecker) and Sara (Curtis).

In 1902 he is listed as the Tax assessor of Mineral County, and later changed to contruction work on the irrigation canal systems of the lower Rio Grande in the valley. After leaving Creede he moved to a ranch in La Jara, and farmed with several partners.

In Jul 1891 he was hauling ore to St, Elmo from the Jimmy Mack Mine in Tin Cup to Quartz. He drove mule teams and built numerous roads and canals in the San Luis Valley. The Chapman canal is still in use today in 2012. I noticed in 2021 that there is a park in Monte Vista called Chapman Park, but have no proof he named it.

He and Mary Emogene rest in Monte Vista, Colorado.

One Son (JAJ) who died before he lived a year is buried in Centerville, CO, which is a few miles from Nathrop, Colorado, in the Weber Family fencing.
