Having buried his first wife, he married Kate Johnston in 1882, and the following year with his wife and children came to this county, buying a farm near Fairmont From there his children went into their own homes and new fields and in 1899 he and his good wife retired from their strenuous life on the farm to their home in Geneva, where he lived until his death, July 21, 1912, faithfully tended at all times by her whom he had chosen.
Mr. Holmes was a direct descendant of Governor Winthrop of colonial days and fame and a relative of Oliver Wendell Holmes, whose writings have found such a large place in American literature He was therefore of that new England type and spirit which has entered so largely into and has shaped so greatly the intellectual, social and civic life of our people. He was a manly man, a firm believer in those great cardinal principles that underlie and give worth to human life, character, and service. Sham and injustice, trickery and fraud he hated with all the strength of his manly nature but truth, from whatever source, and righteousness and fair play he loved, upheld and defended. The end has now come. He has come down to the closing event of this life like the well-ripened grain ready for the harvest. In the esteem of his many friends, in the affection of his children and in the tender and abiding love of his wife, James Holmes has passed onward in the great journey of life.
The funeral was conducted from the old family home by Rev. C. Vincent at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
