William O. Mankey , 87, of Amity, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, in his home.


He was born August 16, 1916, in Amwell Township, a son of Albert O. and Leanna Fern Gray Mankey .


Mr. Mankey attended Amity Elementary School and Trinity High School.


He served in the US Navy during WW II in Guam, Aniwetak and Sasebo, Japan. Mr. Mankey was a signalman on the USS Dorchester.


Mr. Mankey was a member of Amity United Methodist Church.


He was employed by Tygart Valley and Brockway Glass, retiring in 1977 after 41 years of service.


Mr. Mankey was a left-handed pitcher for the Industrial League for 25 years.


He played for the Amity baseball team and in Ten Mile Valley Baseball League.


He was a charter member of the Amwell Township Volunteer Fire Department and helped build the first fire truck.


He was one of the original organizers and a charter member of Anawanna Hunting and Fishing Club.


He enjoyed horseshoe pitching and spending time with his family in the mountains.


On July 22, 1935, he married Louise Gaus, who survived.


Also, surviving are two sons, two sisters, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.


Deceased are a brother, Albert O. Mankey Jr.; a sister, Dora Hart Schwarb; and a granddaughter, Krescent Diane Mankey .
