Mr. Michel "Mike" Gaetana Maggio Sr., 85, of Charleston, passed away peacefully on September, 22, 2012, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston. Mike spent most of his life as a resident of Miami, on Cabin Creek. He was born May 12, 1927, to Francisco and Christina Maggio in Stickney, Raleigh County. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his four sisters and their husbands, Joe and Dolly Sowers, Clifford and Annie Williams, Marco and Julia Cipalot and Paul and Addie Stone.
Mike was retired from American Electric Power Company's Kanawha River Plant in Glasgow. He enjoyed bowling, fishing at his family camp on Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and football. He was especially fond of the WVU Mountaineers and the Pioneers of East Bank High School. He was recognized as a Director's Club Member of the Mountaineer Athletic Club and was named East Bank High School Alumnus of the Year in 1978. Mike was captain of Coach Roy Williams' 1944 Pioneer football team that achieved a 9-1 record. He was named to the first team all Southern that year and received offers to play football from Duke, Tennessee and Kentucky. He elected to take a "war time diploma" in December 1944 and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, where he proudly served on the USS Pride (a destroyer escort) during World War II.

Upon discharge from the Coast Guard he returned home to Miami, on Cabin Creek, where he helped his mother and sister run Probo Grocery, the family grocery store. He met and married Inez "Murph" Murphy, from Swandale, in 1949 and they set up housekeeping in Miami. He drove the high school bus during the 1950s and transported many Cabin Creek students to and from East Bank High School. During the early 1960s he began a road construction career with Vic Greene Construction Company, where he learned to handle all forms of heavy equipment. Mike was adept at driving and operating Ukes, large dozers and rock crushers. He worked on the construction of several major highway projects around the state of West Virginia, including the South Side expressway in Charleston, Interstate 64 in Putnam and Greenbrier counties and Interstate 77 north of Charleston.

In order to spend more time with his family, Mike took a job with FMC in South Charleston at the ordinance plant. He worked his way up to foreman status until the plant began to downsize due to the end of the Vietnam War. In 1969 he started working for Appalachian Power at the Kanawha River Plant in Glasgow. Mike was eventually promoted to store room manager of the plant and remained in that position until his retirement in 1995. Mike and Murph were regular members of the Appalachian Power bowling league that bowled on Monday nights at Robin Lanes for many years.

One of the great accomplishments Mike achieved for his beloved East Bank High School was helping to re-charter and reorganize the East Bank High School Athletic Boosters Club. He helped to obtain the funds and pay for the construction of the field house at Calvert Field, the home of his beloved EBHS Pioneers. Through the hard work and efforts of Mike and fellow Pioneer supporters, the building was paid off in two years. For more than 30 years Mike was the head of the "side line chain gang and he operated the down marker" for home EBHS Pioneer football games. He also routinely arrived hours before home football games and popped the corn that was served at EBHS games for many years. He will long be remembered by many Pioneer supporters, players and coaches for his devotion to the Pioneer football team.

Mike is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Inez "Murph" Maggio; his daughter, Beverly M. Anderson and William M. Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Michel G. Maggio Jr. and Connie J. Maggio of Huntersville, N.C.; and daughter, Mary Kathryn Maggio-Sheets and Steven C. Sheets of Charleston. Mike was very proud of all of his grandchildren, Bryan M. Anderson and wife, Kristina Anderson, Michael D. Anderson, Blair F. Maggio, Michael T. Maggio and Tyler C. Sheets; and his one great-grandchild, Raven M. Anderson. Mike will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews and all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Maggio will have visitation at Wilson Funeral Home, Charleston, on September 24 fro 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. John's Catholic Church, Belle, on September 25, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Kanawha Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.
