Daughter of Joseph & Rachel (Snevely) Glancey

Another of Mercer county's pioneers passed to the great beyond at her home on Washington street, Keithsburg Sunday, November 4, 1900. Mrs. Eva C. Swafford had seen Mercer county and the great state of Illinois develop from an unsettled wilderness to a mighty commonwealth. She had witnessed the passing away of the hardy men and woman whose worth and daring had carved the great state of Illinois from a vast wilderness. Eva C. Swafford was born April 20, 1822, in Wayne county, Indiana. She was the daughter of Joseph and Rachel Glancey. With the family she came to Illinois in 1834 and until her death had made Mercer county her home. The family first settled upon what is now known as the Davis place and during the many years which have passed since then she had not resided more than three or four miles from the place of first settlement. She was united in marriage to Joseph Swafford March 19, 1844. Her husband lived but a few months, dying October 10th, 1844. Mrs. Swafford's death occurred Sunday, November 4th, 1900. She had been in failing health for some weeks. The end came peacefully as one who is tired and sinks to sleep. The funeral was held Tuesday from the late residence, Mrs. Anna Wilson of Monmouth officiating. Her old and warm friends in the persons of Mesdames Myra Wycoff, Josephus Gray, William Gray, O. H. Lloyd, A. B. Childs and Rose Brewer, acted as pall bearers. A wonderful profusion of flowers evidenced the great respect in which the deceased was held. Sweet and appropriate music was rendered. The funeral services throughout were impressive and a great concourse of friends were in attendance to pay their respects to one whom they loved. The life which has gone out was one which was earnest and full of strength. Mrs. Swafford had the courage of her convictions. Early in life she embraced the Spiritualistic faith and died in this belief. All her life she was a firm believer in this doctrine. There remains of her immediate family three sisters and one brother to mourn her death. They are Mrs. Mahala Willits, of Keithsburg; Mrs. Susan Mitchell, of Joy; Mrs. Mary H. Moffett, of Milroy, and E. J. Glancey, of Keithsburg.
