A Lincoln boy's mother and brother died Saturday morning when, authorities say, their sedan was struck by a 99-car Burlington Northern Santa Fe train south of Superior.

Kathy Freeman, dispatcher with the Jewell County Sheriff's Office in Kansas, says 22-year-old Bradley Cusatis Jr. and 43-year-old Tracy Core had been working for a group that was harvesting in the area and may have been trying to enter a field when the northbound train struck their 2002 Suzuki four-door on its passenger side in the middle of the tracks.

Core, of Lincoln, was transported to a local hospital, where she died. Cusatis, of Beatrice, was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:30 a.m.

"Why they were on the tracks, I just don't know," Freeman said.

For Core's young son Levi, the news came just over a year and a half after the death of his father, Bradley Cusatis Sr., who was killed along with a coworker in an evening crash on an icy Interstate 80.

In an email to the Journal Star on Sunday, Pat Buresh, Assistant Principal at Saratoga Elementary, asked for help setting up a fund to support the young boy.

She said the boy learned of his father's death in the middle of the night last winter, and insisted he go to school at Mickle Middle the very next day.

"We provided his safe place and provided for him in many ways," said Buresh, a former administrator at Mickle.

She said Levi's brother Brad was a major influence in his life, keeping him over the summer and during school breaks to work on a farm.
