John came to the US reportedly in 1848 at the age of 18 from Scotland. He married Sallie E Bell in 1888 with Sallie E Bell (Ballard) already having a child named Helen Blanch (Ballard). Sallie was younger by 22 or 23 years with the pair having two daughters. Family history reports that John participated in the Civil War by being a drummer boy and reporting that he witnessed a deserter being shot for his actions during the war. Marriage license indicates Sallie's name however her grave marker is noted as "Sarah E Wood" Census also indicates her as Sallie as well.
