Valentine Echelberry was born in late summer in the Year of our Lord, 1805, about 30 years after the United States became an independent nation. The day and month, was 14 September. He was born in the State of Pennsylvania, to William Echelberry and Elizabeth Durrah.

Valentine's father, William Echelberry, was the son of Valentine Eichelberger, and a veteran of the War of 1812. This senior Valentine, came with his father, to America, (Pennsylvania) in the 1700's.

The Eichelbergers were of German descent, hailing from Bad Durkheim, in the Rheinland of Germany. This area is near France and Luxembourg, in the west and south part of Germany. The Eichelberg name was "Americanized" to Echelberry,in the New World.

When Valentine (named after his grandfather), was born, he was the third of seven sons to William and Elizabeth. Valentine would also come to have three younger sisters, a large family that was typical of the time and place.

Before Valentine had reached the age of seven, it is assumed that father William had moved the family west from Pennsylvania, to Ohio. This is based on the fact that William served in the War of 1812, with an Ohio regiment.

In his 20's, Valentine is recorded as having been married twice, to a Nancy Philby, or Philber, and also to Mary Piearce, both marriages of which, resulted in children.

In 1837, at age 31, Valentine married Nancy Tully. Little is known of the Tully family. The 1880 U.S. Census is reported as Nancy's father being born in Virginia, and her mother being born in Ohio.

To Ms Tully, Valentine sired seven children - four boys, and three girls. The first was William, born in 1839. Little is known of William.

The second was Perry, born in 1843. Young Perry died in hospital, serving in the Civil War. He was killed in the winter of 1865, at David's Island, New York Harbor, of battle wounds received.

Third was Lewis H, (1846-1915), a farmer there in Muskingum County. He married Sarah Crumbaker.

Fourth was daughter Margaret E. (1848-1906), whom married John Wilson. Margaret is buried at Duncan Falls Cemetery in Muskingum County.

Fifth was Ira (1851-1906), a farmer that married Emma J Frazier.

The sixth child was Mary, born in 1855. Little is known of Mary.

The last child born to Valentine and Nancy Tully Echelberry was Edith Malissa Echelberry. It is recorded in family Bibles, that Edith was half American Indian. No further details about Edith's origins are known.

Edith was born in 1857. She married Austin Teel. After the Teels' sixth child was born in Ohio, the family moved West to an area near Farnam, Nebraska.

Edith died shortly after the birth of the seventh child, son Charles Teel. She is buried in Moorefield Cemetery, Frontier County, Nebraska.

Valentine Echelberry lived a long and full life, being a farmer in Muskingum County Ohio his entire life. He raised many children.

Valentine passed to the Good Lord in the Spring of 1888, on 5 May, at over 82 1/2 years of age. Wife Nancy passed away about a year and half later, on 11 September, 1890. They rest together in eternity in the chuch cemetery Blue Rock Baptist Cemetery, with their sons.
