William was the son of William Campbell and Laura Johnson Lathrop of New York and had siblings Judith, Anthony, Laura, Adonirium, and Aranitta. His father was one of the first setlers of Milton Township. William married Maria Dubbs on 20 April 1855 in Wood County and they had Alice, John, Jane, Griffin, Ella, James and Lewis Ashley. He was a farmer in Milton Township. William died from dropsy at the age of 83 years 9 months and 3 days.
