Eliza Jane Crouch was born on 15 August 1851 in Utica, Venango County, Pennsylvania, the third (and first surviving) child of Aaron Baird Crouch (1824-1855) and Susan Shannon Crouch (1828-1915). After her father died when she was 2 years old, her mother was then married to Joseph Sylvester (ca.1824-bef.1900). Eliza was married to Joseph Gardner Luther (1847-1920) on 28 February 1870 in Milo, Bureau County, Illinois. They had five children, two of whom died young. After her husband Joe Luther was killed in a tragic automobile-train crash on Christmas day, 1920, her health swiftly failed, and she died on 27 June 1921 in Des Moines at the age of 69. She and her husband were buried at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
