Lewell Adair attended Central Methodst College, Fayette, MO, and was graduated from the University of Alabama. He was vice president for Atlantic-Richfield International Division, Eastern Region, and spent 24 years overseas with the firm in Venezuela, Libya and England. He returned to the states in 1970 and retired in 1978 after 41 years with Atlantic-Richfield. He returned to Carthage in 1981.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 12th Army Group, Military Intelligence, attaining the rank of captain.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He was married to Betty Swope March 11, 1949, at Bentonville, AR.
