Byron "Humpy" Campbell, Former City Fireman, Dies

Byron R. "Humpy" Campbell, 58, of 613 North Webster, a former assistant chief of the Jacksonville Fire Department and a member of the department for 23 years, died suddenly at 4 p.m. Friday at Memorial hospital in Springfield.

He had been a patient there for two days.

He was born in the Literberry community, February 7, 1907, a son of Davis and Elizabeth Stevenson Campbell. He was married to Myrle Louise Shawen on Sept. 20, 1925 in Winchester, and she survives.

Also surviving is a daughter, Maxine, wife of Harvey Dean of Jacksonville; three sisters, Mrs. Ila Bacon of Jacksonville, Mrs. Mary Catherine Coverly of New York, New York and Mrs. Irene Stringham of California and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Lousie Campbell and Shirley Mae Campbell and a brother.

He was a member of the Literberry Baptist church, a veteran of World War II, and for four and one half years after his retirement September 16, 1959, he served as a cottage parent at the Illinois School for the Deaf.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Jacksonville East Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
