Joe was born in Christiana, Norway to Lauritz Christopherson and Karen Henrikke Johansdatter. After the death of his mother, his father remarried Olivia Wilhelmina and they immigrated to the USA settling in Wyoming.

He later returned to his native land of Norway and served two years as a Mormon missionary. He returned to the US, bringing Hannah with him, on August 23, 1900. He married Hannah at the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake City, UT on September 20, 1900. Lorenzo Snow performed the ceremony. From there they went to Wyoming and resided for a time on their homestead near Burlington where he was one of the pioneers. In 1903 the Joseph Christopherson and H.A. Woodruff families moved to Meeteetse Creek and opened up the Black Diamond Coal Mine. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Christopherson eight children, six of whom-- Joseph, Amelia, Lauritz, Sophia, Grant and Ella May lived to adulthood. The other children died in infancy and are buried beside Hannah, their mother.
After his wife Hannaha passed away in 1915, he married Annie Owen.
