Honored Citizen and Leader Dies
The announcement of the sudden death of Peter Clingaman at his home on West Elm Street Friday night was a shock to Wauseon and vicinity. All his life had been spent in Wauseon and vicinity. He was kind and friendly and during his during his active life had won many friends who held him in high regard. He had been a teacher in the public schools in Fulton County for 16 years and a rural carrier out of Wauseon post office for 28 years. He had served as a member of the Board of Education of the Wauseon school district and clerk of the for several years. He was elected and served six years as a member of the village council.

Peter Clingaman, son of Fulton County's only surviving Civil War Veteran, Daniel A Clingaman, and the late Louisa Minnich Clingaman, was born in Tedrow (formerly Spring Hill) April 21, 1876. A few years later he moved with his parents to the present homestead farm where he father resides one and one-half miles north of Wauseon on St. Rt. 108. He attended the public schools in Clinton township, and one year at Wauseon when he entered the Fayette Normal at Fayette (Ohio) and prepared himself for the teaching profession. He taught ten years in the rural school districts and six years in the Wauseon public schools. He was an excellent teacher and retired from the profession only to enter the rural mail service out of the Wauseon Post Office. He held this position for 28 years when the government retired him 8 years ago, on account of continuous number of years in that service. The patrons on his route regretted that the government should retire him for he had proven a true friend and a faithful and honest employee.

He was elected and served three terms as a member of the Village Council of Wauseon. He gave the people of the town his devoted service always acting in what he was convinced was for their best interests. It was while he was Chairman of the Sidewalk Committee that more walks were built than in any other two years.

Mr. Clingaman was a true and consistant member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Wauseon. For 46 years he was an officer in that church, 40 years as an Elder and six years as a Deacon.

On September 17, 1908, Mr. Clingaman was united in marriage to Miss Edith H. Leu of this city. He was devoted to his home and his family and their happiness and welfare was his greatest pleasure.

He is survived by his bereaved wife, Edith; children: Charlotte Clingaman, a teacher in the Piqua, Ohio HS; Mrs. Helen Reighard of Delta; David A. Clingaman, a teacher in Defiance HS; Daniel W. Clingaman, a personnel officer for the Ohio Steel Founders Co., Springfield, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Alice Geringer (Lowell) of Wauseon and John Clingaman (Helen) with the Randolph Furniture Co. of Wauseon; his aged father "Uncle" Dan Clingaman, 102 years of age, a sister, Mrs. C. B. Fauver (Jessie Lodema) on the old homestead and nine grandchildren.

During the last week he was not feeling well and on Wednesday consulted a physician. His condition improved and he was up and around the house most of the time. He ate a light supper Friday evening and a few hours later retired. About 11PM he got up and sat in a chair while Mrs.Clingaman was attending to some household duties. She heard him breathing heavily and went to his chair, and in a few minutes, he passed away.

Services were held from the First Christian Church (Elm St., Wauseon) Monday afternoon conducted by his pastor Rev. Russell Deitch. Burial was in the family plot in the Wauseon Union Cemetery, near his parents.
