Catherine died September 2, 1865 in Griggsville.
He then married Sarah J. McCune Smith. She had previously been married to Charles Smith (1842-1863). They had one child who joined the family with Steven and his children. Her name was Jessie Lena Smith (1862-1909)
Steven and Sarah had three sons:
Ashley Bentley Northup, 1868-1937
Anson Northup, 1871-1938
Arden Northup, 1875-1952.
The 1868 census lists his occupation as Wheelwright; 1880 census lists his occupation as Wagon Maker.
