Pg. #3: W.H. Williams, our County Collector, died of apoplexy last Monday afternoon. He was born in
Prairie twp, this county, on May 6, 1840. He was the son of Coalden J. and Margaret Williams. He was
married in 1863 to Miss A.J. Williams, daughter of William and Nancy Williams, by whom he had five
children. His wife and three children – Maggie, aged 14, and Earl and George Vest, aged respectively 3
and 2 years – survive him. During the late civil war he cast his fortunes with the Southern Confederacy,
and proved himself a gallant soldier. He was captured once and confined in Gratiot and Alton prisons for a
year or more. He will be buried today, Wednesday, in the city cemetery, by the Masonic and Odd Fellow
fraternity, of which he was an honored member.
