Mr Clarke came to Miles City 60 years ago this month, directly from Liverpool, England, at which point he purchased tickets for his family, then consisting of Mrs Clarke and their son, Alfred, three and a half years of age.
Mr Clarke was born in Lowestoft, England, on September 9 1853. He was married on Christmas Day, 1876, to Miss Alice Boyce, who preceded him in death in Miles City.
Mr Clarke resided in Miles City until 1920, covering a period of 40 years, when, in 1922, he went to CA to make his home. The remains were returned to Miles City for burial.
The surviving children include Alfred R Clarke of Terry; Emily Hardie of San Leandro; W B Clarke of Miles City; Charles G Clarke of Terry; Harry G Clarke of San Leandro; Elizabeth W Kirkpatrick of Gand Junction Co; Alice Pankonin of La CA; and W Roberts Clarke of San Leandro. In addition there are 23 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren surviving.
A sunset service was held yesterday evening, Wednesday, at the graveside of the Custer County cemetery.
