Mrs. Barbara Kohinke Burns, the wife of George W. Burns, 927 Eighteenth street, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Fikejs, on January first at 3:30 p.m.
Mrs. Burns was born in Johnson county in 1872. On March 13, 1889 in Mount Vernon, Iowa, she was married by the Rev. Mr. Heald to the husband who survives. Six children were born to this union; Mrs. Merle Busenbark, Mrs. Fred Thompson and Ivan G. Burns of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Charles Fikejs, Clifford W. and Robert P. Burns of Marion. A son died in infancy and a daughter, Esther, died at the age of 22. There are twelve grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. John Krob of Solon, Iowa, and one brother, Martin Kohinke, of California.
She was a faithful member of the Methodist church, joining in 1894. Her entire married life has been spent in Marion township and in this city.
The funeral services were held this Thursday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by her pastor, Dr. J.M. Walters, assisted by Rev. F.K. Ward of Cedar Rapids. Burial was made in Oak Shade cemetery.
Mrs. Burns was apparently in her usual good health, but was stricken suddenly while enjoying the New Year's festivities with her family. A devoted, loving wife and mother, a sympathetic friend and neighbor has passed to her reward, leaving a memory fragrant with kindly, cheerful deeds. Of her it can be truthfully said: "None knew her but to love her; none named her but to praise."
