His parents were Jacob (native of Scotland) and Christina (Wheeling) a native to PA. Jacob was raised in the in the hills of PA and was educated there. In 1852 he ventured on his own in the same profession as his father, farming. In 1854, he left PA and arrived in Henderson, Sibley county, MN and worked on the government survey team for over a year and then returned to Henderson and entered the carpentry trade until 1858 and then went to IA.

In March 1861, he returned to Henderson for a brief time only to return to IA and come back in October to enlist in Co A 4th Minnesota Infantry and served until November 1863 when discharged and returned to a home in Scott county (perhaps over the river from Henderson) until 1865 when he moved to McLeod county near where Brownton is now located.

On december 24, 1864, he married Miss hannah B Thompson, a native of Canada East and daughter of Andrew, who died in CA, and Maria (Dayton), who was still living in CA as of 1888. The couple had nine children (as of 1888):

A year later, he moved to Eagle Lake, MN and lived for 5 years but he returned to McLeod county once again and purchased land on section 16 (North) Hutchinson township to make his home.
