Born September 3, 1892 in Burlington, Alamance County, as a twin with sister Agnes Heritage, Dover C. Heritage was the son of James H. Heritage and Emily Marshall Heritage. He was one of twelve children (all but one survived to adulthood.) Dover’s 94 years spanned the Spanish-American war, WW1, the arrival of indoor plumbing, the great Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, WWII, the Korean War and the landing on the moon. He served in the National Guard which was called up in May of 1917, serving in the trenches in France. He lived a full and long life. Numerous family and regional stories were told to Corinne E. Bivins and Gail Cox Bolden and these were written down and recorded in a 214 page book titled: When Shoeshines Were A Nickel, an Oral History of Alamance County, NC, privately printed in 1986.
