Died of Cancer
The body of John R. Whitcher, who died of cancer in Pacific Grove this morning, was brought to Salinas on train No. 24 this afternoon for interment. The deceased was a man about 43 years of age. He leaves a wife and four sons and a sister, all of whom accompanied the remains to this city.

J.R. Whitcher was a son of Thomas Whitcher, now residing in San Jose. His mother lives in Salinas, as do also his sisters, Mrs. James Worthington and Mrs. Leonard. His wife is a daughter of the late James Coffey of Salinas.

Deceased was born in Blanco and has resided in Corral de Tierra most of his life. He is well known here. (The Californian, Salinas, CA, September 21, 1907)

Laid Away to Rest in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Salinas
The funeral of John A. Whitcher, who passed away in Pacific Grove Saturday morning, was held in Salinas at 10 o’clock this forenoon and a large concourse of friends followed his remains to the Odd Fellows’ cemetery, where a tear-bedewed flower-covered mound now marks his last earthly resting place.

John A. Whitcher was a son of Thomas Whitcher, now residing in San Jose. His mother lives in Salinas. He leaves one brother and three sisters – William Whitcher of Gonzales, Mrs. West and Mrs. J.T. Worthington of Salinas, and Mrs. H.A. Hewston of Watsonville. The malady to which he succumbed was cancer. When the end came he was surrounded by his wife and children, his brother and brother’s wife and his sister, Mrs. Hewston, all of whom accompanied the remains to this city.
