Charles' parents were Antoine Dreyer (b 1802) and Catherine Berger (b 1802). He was the 7th of 9 children: Antoine (b 1825), Marie Clare (b 1827), Daniel (b 1828), Anna Marie (b 1831), Amand (b 1833), Madeline (b 1835), Charles (b 1837), Caroline (b 1841), Rosalie (b 1846).

Charles emigrated to the US between 1851-1853. He petitioned for naturalization in April 1859, and was granted citizenship at that time.

In April 1861, Charles volunteered into the Garde Lafayette, 18th Regiment Company D, at the very beginning of the Civil War. He served 4 months.

After the war and for many years, Charles worked in the Reimel family shoe business in downtown Philadelphia.
