It is seldom that one family is called upon to mourn two deaths in one day but such is the case in the Dudley family in our town.
This morning, (Thursday, May 23rd, 1901), at 6:30 o'clock, Mr. E.A. Dudley, a well-known and highly esteemed citizen passed away, aged 73 years, after an illness of ten days. About 8 o'clock p.m., Miss Lizzie Dudley, a daughter of the deceased, died at the C. & O. Hospital, and thus father and daughter are in death united. Miss Dudley was operated on last Thursday for gallstone and the operation proved successful, but complications followed which could not be
controlled by the skilled physicians in charge of her case, and Wednesday she rapidly grew worse.
Mr. E.A. Dudley was born and reared at Jennings Gap, in Augusta County. He was married in 1855 to Miss Mary A. Kunklie, who died in 1890. In 1884 he moved to this place and has since been prominently identified with the growth of the town. Deceased is survived by nine children, among whom
is Mr. Edward T. Dudley, Agent of the C. & O. at Craigsville. Staunton Spectator and Vindicator, May 31, 1901; From Clifton Forge.
