Higginsville, May 12.-At the request of Mrs. Sarah Lou Ann Creviston I write the following facts of her death, given by those present. She desired they should be printed as a warning to the human race. She and her daughter, Minnie, were living alone, her other children's work calling them away: her husband was in the western part of Illinois at Grand Tour, Union County. On May 5th @ 3pm, she sent her daughter to Mrs. Sarah Roger's, a quarter of a mile on an errand. She went to extinguish a brush heap that was on fire near a line fence between her and Mrs. Reese's, when her clothing caught on fire and burned off, her shoes only were left, and they were badly burned. Mrs Ellen Foreman heard her screams and went to her aid, followed her to her home whre she had walked 300 feet, her body being burned badly all over except her face and hair.
She sent for her children: when her daughter returned, who had been gone only twenty minutes, her first words were, "Minnie, I am going to die." As her daughter was applying restoratives the suffering mother sang the song through, "Asleep in Jesus."
She sent for Mr Jake Cardiff, a class-leader, and when he arived she asked him to pray for her and made all arrangements about her burial. She selected three hymns for Mr Cardiff to sing, 'Shall we gather at the river', There's a gentle voice within", and He leadeth me, He leadeth me'.
She wanted to be taken to the church and funeral preached by Rev John Vincene, assisted by Rev Hardenbrook. She had been a church member for a good many years in the M.E. church, but she died a christian. She was an obliging neighbor, a devoted mother and died at 7:15 pm on the 5th (lost?) In full faith of a home in Heaven. She said she was ready and willing to go. After she was past speaking she was asked by Mrs Dr Porter and Mrs Cardiff and others, if it was all well with her and she bowed her head that is was. She complained of no suffering, only of smothering and her stomach, although her back was paralyzed.
She died with a smile, showing the world that she met her God in peace. Medical aid was summoned and everything was done, but all in vain, too late.
On the 6th @ 2 pm, a large concourse of people followed the remains to the church. After an able sermon was preached, the body was buried in Higginsville cemetery. The friends have the sympathy of the whole community.
