DEATH OF A GOOD MAN
Charles Hughart Passed Away at West View Yesterday Morning
Charles Hughart died at West View at the home of his son-in-law, C. M. Trimble, at 3 o'clock yesterday morning in his 80th year. He was taken sick last Monday, and was ill only three days. The funeral will take place at the Methodist church at West View at 11 o'clock today and will be conducted by Rev. Holmes Ralston, pastor of Hebron Presbyterian church. After the services the body will be brought to Staunton and conveyed over the C. & O. to Millboro, and will be interred late today or early tomorrow at Windy Cove Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Hughart was a ruling elder and near which was his home. The deceased was a native of Bath county, where he had lived an upright and godly life and where he was highly esteemed for his many virtues. For some time he had made his home with his daughter and son-in-law at West View. His wife preceded him to the grave, but five children survive him, two sons and three daughters : John E. Hughart of Sewell, and Charles A. Hughart of Charleston, W. Va.; Mrs. E. F. Smith of Florida; Mrs. Maggie Mealy of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. C. M. Trimble of West View.

Company E, 10th Virginia Battalion Reserves, Barton's Brigade, G.W.C. Lee's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Bath County VA; 40 year-old laborer; 6', dark complexion, dark eyes, dark hair.

Enlisted on 4/9/1862 at Shenandoah Mountain, VA., he was mustered into Company K, 52nd Virginia Infantry as a Private.
Present on April 9-30/1862 Roll.
Discharged 7/25/1862; reason not listed by most likely due to majority.
Enlisted on 4/16/1864 in Bath County, he was mustered into Captain Wm. Byrd's Company of Reserves as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company E, 10th Virginia Battalion Reserves.
Listed as Acting Justice of the Peace.

The 10th Battalion, Virginia Reserves (4th Battalion, Valley Reserves) was organized 8/23/1864, with 5 companies, A to E.

Postwar lived in Valley Mills, Augusta Co, VA., where he was a cabinetmaker and Justice of the Peace.

This aged and highly esteemed citizen died on Thursday morning of last week at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. C.M. Trimble, at West View, aged about 80 years; he was sick only three days.
Deceased was a native of Bath County, but for some time had been making his home with his daughter.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Holmes Rolston, after which the remains were brought to this city and taken to Bath County for interment.
He is survived by five children: Mr. John E. Hughart, of Sewell, W.Va.; Mr. Chas. A. Hughart, of Charleston, W.Va.;
Mrs. E.F. Smith, of Florida; Mrs. Mealy, of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Trimble, of West View.
The pallbearers were Messrs. Henry Snyder, Joel Foster, Warren Roberts, Samuel Whisman, Edward Kirkpatrick and Wm. Rosen. Staunton Spectator and Vindicator, February 8, 1901.
