Married to Sarah Catherine Storts on December 19 1884 in O'Neill, Nebraska. Robert and Sarah had two children, Roy Hudson Earl and Mary Isabel Earl.
Robert was the second of two rangers hired on January 24, 1906 as a ranger for the Platt National Park in Sulphur Springs, Oklahoma. He was hired at the prevailing wage of $60 per month plus $12 per month for his horse. Since Oklahoma was not a state at the time Rober was commissioned as a Deputy United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indian Territory out of Ardmore, Indian Territory. His commision was limited to the federal reservation.
