Robert was the second of two rangers hired on January 24, 1906 as a ranger for the Platt National Park in Sulphur Springs, Oklahoma. He was hired at the prevailing wage of $60 per month plus $12 per month for his horse. Since Oklahoma was not a state at the time Rober was commissioned as a Deputy United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indian Territory out of Ardmore, Indian Territory. His commision was limited to the federal reservation.
