William F. Harney, 85, Minot, formerly of the Leeds area, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008 in a Minot Hospital.

William was born May 21, 1923 on the family farm in Benson County, near Brinsmade, North Dakota, the son of William and Cora (Cocking) Harney. Bill was educated in a rural school in Lake Ibsen County and through his reading and great memory was self-educated and a highly intelligent person.

Bill enlisted with the U.S. Navy in February of 1944, attending boot camp in Farragut, Idaho and later received engineering training at Ford Naval School in Detroit, Michigan. He served on the USS Lawrence and was a plank owner on the USS Midway in World War II until receiving his honorable discharge in March of 1948. Bill's son-in-law, Captain Ronald McElraft was stationed on the Midway during the Iraq War.

Bill returned to the Brinsmade area, where he was employed with Hofstrand Farms. He was united in marriage to Dolores Fox on September 18, 1951 at Minnewaukan, ND. They lived in the Leeds area until 1957, when they moved to Minot, where he was employed at the Minot Air Force Base in civil service work as a steam plant operator. He retired in June of 1986.

Bill was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #753, Minot, and its Last Men's Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Bill had many interests and hobbies and especially enjoyed horses.

His loving family includes: Wife of fifty-seven years, Dolores; Children: Deborah Harney, Colorado Springs, CO, Elaine (Jon) Ainsworth, Colorado Springs, CO, Kevin (Pam) Harney, Pulaski, NY and Michelle (Kevin) Anderson, Williston, ND; Grandchildren: Paul Brown, Elizabeth Ainsworth, Lindsey Ainsworth, Jennifer Harney-Pemberton, William O. Anderson; Great-Grandson: Alexander Good; Brother: James Harney, Santa Maria, CA;Twin sister and brother: Mary Esterby, Hawthorne, NV, and Tom Harney, Tioga, ND, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John P Harney and an infant daughter, Diane.

Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot;
Interment: St Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Leeds, ND;
Visitation: There will be no reviewal; however friends may sign the memorial register on Friday from 2:00-7:00pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Jude's Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place - Memphis, TN 38105.
