Mr. Jabe Bell improved the old Leslie-Lassiter place when he bought it. He built a neat frame house and had it painted a bright yellow, which used to be generally known as the "yellow house". He married first, Mrs. Smith, widow of Paschal Smith. She lived but a year or 2 having died while they were boarding with Dr. Frank Bell, at the old Waugh place, and buried by the side of her first husband in the graveyard on the Ridge. Mr. Smith was a brother of the late Lewis Smith, and at the time of his death, we have been told, there were considerable talk of his having been poisoned.
Mr. Bell married, the second time, Miss Sue Hooks. On the day of his marriage he was taken sick; on arriving a home, he immediately took to his bed and lived but a short time. He was also buried at the Ridge.
A son by his first wife, Mr. Haynes Bell, now lives in Texas. This first wife, Mrs. Smith was the mother of the late Robert Smith and of Willie Smith, the latter of whom resides somewhere in Texas.
