Joseph Merrill
Joseph Frances Merrill passed away on Friday morning, June 17, at his home in Bristow, at the age of 83, following a lingering illness, due to complication of old age.
He was born on August 28, 1871, in Butler county, the son of Joseph and Louisa McKinney Merrill and he married Clara Mullarky on Oct 22, 1897, at Bristow. To this union 14 children were born. They farmed in the vicinity of Dumont and Hansell until retiring at Bristow in 1941. Survivors include his wife; six sons, Everett of Hansell, Joseph of Cleveland, Illinois, Richard of State Center, Gilbert of Waco, Texas and Frank and Percy of Bristow; seven daughters, Mrs. Henry (Frances) Schwoebel of East St. Louis, Illinois, Mrs. Wilbur (Gladys) Elliott of Dumont, Mrs. Ilo (Ruth) Huffman of Creston, Mrs. Marlys Hood of Mason City, Mrs. Lloyd (Maude) Dovey of Greene, Mrs. Jim (Nellie) Benderman of South Gate, California, and Mrs. Gilbert (Jean) Kuhn of Charles City; 40 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Also two brothers, Tom of Kempton, North Dakota and Jess of Thief River Falls, Minnesota and three sisters, Mrs. Sue McClelland and Mrs. Nathaniel Fuller of Sarasota, Florida and Mrs. Nellie Cantrel of Los Angeles, California. Preceding him in death was one daughter, Mrs. Bert (Madge) Riemenschneider, formerly of State Center. A short prayer service was held in the Vogel Funeral Home at Dumont at 1:30 on Monday afternoon with the funeral services being held at 2:00 in the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Bristow with Rev. G. E. MacCanon officiating. Burial was held in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Bristow.
