The surname is found in early records as 'Tison.' Tyson had become common by the early 1900's.

In 1848, Matthew, son of Cornelius Tyson, married Eliza Crosby, dau of Peter Crosby. [Hux v 1 p 266] the marriage record is not found in Irwin Co, GA nor Lowndes Co.

Matthew and his wife were '...members of Cross Roads Wesleyan Methodist Church, and were buried in the cemetery now know as Crossroad Cem, in present Cook County.' Survey of Cook Cem list his birth year as 1822; Hux v 1-birth year as 1824; 1900 Berrien GA census state as Dec 1821.

Mar 1862 as Math Tison, Berrien County GA Muster Roll, "Berrien Minute Men." As Mathew Tison U S Civil War Soldiers, 1861-1865: GA State Guard Godfrey's Co, 11 GA Cavalry; 11th Regiment, GA Calvary. Film # M226 roll 60.

Jun 1900 Berrien, GA census as: Mathew Tison b. Dec 1821 in GA, both parents b. in SC; Eliza E b. Jan 1831 in SC, her fathr in SC, her mother in GA. They had eleven children by 1900 and only 8 living.
Huxford and Ensley list Matthew as bur Crossroads Cem, Cook, GA-unmarked.
