Nathaniel was a Revolutionary war veteran, having enlisted at the age of sixteen years in Captain Samuel Billings' regiment. Family stories state that he later served under General George Washington in the summer of 1777.

Natianiel Aikens married May "Polly" Tupper on December 27, 1784 in Barnard, Windsor County, Vermont. Nathaniel and Mary had at least 9 children while living in Barnard: Solomon (b. Sep 1, 1785), Sarah (b. Nov 29, 1787), Dorcas (b. Apr 8, 1791), Lurania (b. May 6, 1793), John (b. May 7, 1795), Mary (b. Aug 13, 1797), Hannah (b. Nov 13, 1799), Nathaniel (b. 1802) and Daphine (b. 1805).

In 1811, Nathaniel moved to St. Lawrence county, NY where he purchased land for a farm in Potsdam township. He died in Potsdam in 1836.
