Edgewood Woman Wrote For 49 Years
(the following is a summary of this story)
Mrs. Emma Wait died at her home min Edgewood Thursday following a stroke suffered Monday night.
She began her correspondence for the old Edgewood Journal and its successor, the Clayton County Press-Journal. Her pen name was "Mehitable" and she reported town happenings.
Her final items appeared in last week's issue of the Press-Journal.
She was born near Anamosa on 02 April 1861 to Mr. and Mrs. James Alloway.
When she was six months old, her family moved to a farm near Edgewood.
Her father was reported to have shot the last bear in the county,
She was educated in the rural schools of Lodomillo Township.
She married Cordon Stone on 25 Aug 1877 and they had six daughters. He died in 1904.
She married George Wait on 22 Oct 1905. He died in 1916.
In addition to her reporting, she did practical nursing in the Edgewood vicinity for many years.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and taught the Banner Class of elderly women for 18 years. She was also press correspondent for the Hiram Steele Woman's Relief Corps.
Survivors:
4 daughters: Mrs. Richard Phelps (Strawberry Point), Mrs. E.E. Stone (Dyersville), Mrs. Gus Otto (Greeley), and Mrs. Joe Barger (Edgewood)
Also 25 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
