Andrew enlisted in the Confederate States Army on July 25, 1862 at Wake County, North Carolina. He was mustered as a private in Company L of the 21st North Carolina Infantry. On May 1863 he was taken as prisoner of war at Chancellorsville, Virginia and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC. He was transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware and exchanged. On July 20, 1864 he was again taken as prisoner of war at Stephenson's Depot, Virginia. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio. When he was taken prisoner in 1864 he was listed as being 34 years old, 5'10" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and farmer prior to his enlistment.
