Daughter of the late Andrew Daniel and Alma Herren Abernathy, she was the widow of Joseph Edward Tarkington (married on September 21, 1946). In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Doyle Albernathy, Alton Abernathy and Harold Albernathy. She was survived by her three daughters, Laurie T. Trussell (Jery), Lisa T. Miller (Gary) and Linda T. Alligood (Joseph); her sister, Lorene Gentry; her brother, Charles Albernathy; grandchildren, Brent Modlin (Wendy), Dana Berry (Greg), Justin Modlin (Crystal), Kelly Miller, Daniel Miller, Casey Alligood, Britney Alligood and Kendall Alligood; eight great-grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives and friends. She retired from the Beaufort County School System as an administratve assistant in 1996. She was a member of the Heritage Book Club. She was a member of Bath Christian Church. Her funeral was held on September 14, 2012, with The Rev. Curtis White officiating.
