Verna R. Mortimer, 95, of East Stroudsburg, passed away on Saturday, March 25, at Stroud Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Mortimer, who passed away in 1966.
Born on Nov. 27, 1910, at Dodders Corners, she was the daughter of the late James and Delilah Hawk Heydt, who had six other children: Bill, Raymond, Harold Heydt, Mable Nauman, Beulah Frable and Myrtle Hamblin.
She attended Paradise Valley Grade School until the 12th grade, then went on to employment at Pocono People's College in Henryville as a cook and at Horne's Inn in Mount Pocono as an all-round helper.
She was married to Roy Imbt on Oct. 14, 1930. She was assistant cook at the old Swiftwater School in the 1930s and early 1940s. During the Depression, food for lunches was difficult to come by and she depended on her skillful use of powdered milk, eggs, dried beans and plenty of spuds to turn out wholesome meals.
She and her husband and their three children, Audrey Teresa, Shirly Ann and Roland Gene, moved to Paradise Valley and became caretakers of the Aben Rhue Farm "Evenings Rest" for 13 years. They then moved to Stroudsburg and she worked at Art Metal a defense plant until Aug. 11, 1945. She left at that time in order to concentrate on caring for her family after the death of husband.
For five years during the summer, she worked as a waitress at the Shawnee Inn. The family returned to Paradise and she worked at Rhode's Coffee Shop and the Gap View Inn. She married Charles Mortimer on Aug. 29, 1949. Also included in the long list of places enhanced by her working there are the Ham House, in Cresco and the Promised Land Hunting Camp. Even the demanding schedule of her busy home life did not keep her from becoming and remaining a very active and devoted member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 922. She was chaplain for nine years, chairperson for the Legion Boy's School, helping prepare and serve dinners as well as participating in all other activities to benefit the Legion and Auxiliary.
Her special interest has been the veterans in the hospital in Wilkes-Barre. She visited them along with other members, many times, supplying them with picnics, goodies, games and prizes. She made 700 lap robes for patients. She has been the recipient of many honors, among them the Rehabilitation Award, five Certificates for Activity in Rehabilitation, as well as membership honors.
She has donated blood in Palm Beach, Alaska and Monroe County. She also was president of the PO of A and received a PO of A award.
Her main hobby was hunting. She bagged her first deer at age 13. She was a member of the Guetsville Rod and Gun Club in Allentown. She also enjoyed bowling, canning and, of course, cooking.
She also received a certificate of appreciation from both the Joint Installation of the Legion and Auxiliary at the same time. She was a member of the Keokee Chapel United Methodist Church in Paradise Valley.
She is survived by two daughters, Audrey T. Imbt Smith of Stroudsburg and Shirley A. Imbt Carey of Texas; a son Roland G. Imbt of Paradise Valley; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Wayne Pratt will officiate a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, at the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. Burial will follow at Keokee Chapel Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a calling period from noon until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial donations may be made to the George N. Kemp Post 346 American Legion, 201 East 5th St., East Stroudsburg, PA 18301, or the American Legion Post 922, Spruce Cabin Road, Canadensis
