In 1823 Joseph married Rachel Young, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Baton) Young, in Sussex County, New Jersey. Later in 1835 after beginning their married life in New Jersey, they emigrated to Indiana, being among the earliest settlers of Blountsville (Henry County) Indiana.
They had eight sons and two daughters:
