"C. Richard Schine, executive vice president of a family-owned company that has real estate holdings in Palm Beach County, California and New York state, died of a heart attack in Boca Raton. He was 53.

Mr. Schine was a graduate of Andover Prep School in Andover, Mass., and Harvard University. After earning a business degree, he went to work for the company that his father, J. Myer Schine, and an uncle, Louis W. Schine, had founded in the 1920s, said his sister, Renee Crown of Chicago.

His father started the family business after he bought a movie theater in Syracuse, N.Y., and began developing an independent chain that soon operated theaters in five states. In the 1940s, J. Myer Schine purchased the Roney Plaza hotel in Miami Beach, the old McAllister Hotel in Miami, the Boca Hotel at Boca Raton, and hotels in five other states, including the Ambassador on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The family also acquired all of the beachfront land from Deerfield Beach up to Highland Beach and the land on which the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club was later built.

By the mid 1950s, when Mr. Schine entered the Schine family business, most of the hotels had been sold. In 1965, the Schine Enterprises movie theaters, broadcast properties and some land in Palm Beach County were sold to Realty Equities Corp. for $150 million.

After his father`s death in 1971, Mr. Schine continued to work in real- estate development out of Schine Enterprises offices in Valley Stream, N.Y., and the Boca Construction Co., off South Ocean Boulevard. The family still owns land in Palm Beach County, California, New York and the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

Mr. Schine, who was divorced, lived much of the time at his mother`s home in New York City.

``He was a wonderful musician,`` said his sister, who said he played the guitar and piano for his own enjoyment and at family get-togethers. He also was a master scuba diver.

Crown said her brother had come to Boca Raton two weeks before his death for vacation and for the 85th birthday of his mother, Hildegarde Feldman Schine, one of Palm Beach County`s social doyennes. He was preparing to take his mother to Durham, N.C., when the heart attack struck. He died on May 10.

Surviving are his mother; his sister; two sons, Jeffrey and Gregory, both of New York City; and a brother, G. David Schine of Los Angeles."
