She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kutztown. As a young girl she, with her parents and two brothers, moved to Longswamp Township.
She and Carl married on Christmas Eve 1940 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Bess was active in the community, especially the Kutztown Women's Club, Kutztown Area Historical Society, and was Judge of Elections for Maxatawny Township for thirty years. She was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Kutztown University during the presidency's of Dr. Italo Defrancesco and Dr. Cyrus Beekey. She had an interest in art and took classes at KU and private lessons in silversmithing, painting and sculpturing. This led to a friendship with Carolyn Ramsey and the Reading Art Alliance. Bess sculpted the Dolphins atop the Pagoda. She loved to cook, bake and enjoyed family dinners on birthdays and holidays. Her family was scattered from New York to Mexico and she made an effort to see them as often as possible.
Bess enjoyed bridge club with dear friends. She had a great talent in sewing and took lessons in tailoring suits, antiquing was a favorite and working on the very old farm house they lived in for 62 years. She and Carl traveled to Germany where he served in WW2, and visited Scotland where her ancestors originated.
She is survived by a son, two daughters, four grandchildren five great-grandchildren and a sister. She was predeceased by six siblings. Graveside services September 15, in Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown.
