Agnes was named after her maternal grandmother, Agnes Steedsman.

Agnes Steedsman Watt's father was Peter Watt. Peter enlisted in the US Army immediately after immigrating and died in Pueblo, Mexico in 1847. Agnes' mother Janet is buried close to Agnes.

Agnes had a double-first cousin also named Agnes Watt. The latter Agnes was the daughter of Isaac Watt (brother of Peter) and Mary Ramsay (sister to Janet). The latter Agnes was born in NY in 1845 soon after her parents immigrated and grew up in Iowa. She married William Stirling. The two Agnes cousins are often confused with one another in family trees.
